How are new ideas developed? Research and creativity are vital. Design research unites the two, calling on designers to act as researchers and to experiment with materials and manufacturing processes. Design research combines scientific,
manual, and artistic methods, and involves cooperation with different fields like art, material studies, or communications. Design research is an open process, one set into motion by a designer's curiosity.

Julia Lohmann's Department of Seaweed and Petra Blaisse's Solar Curtain are two examples of current design research. Both designers work with the goal of shaping a better future without being bound to a single result. In doing so, they make unexpected outcomes possible.
